Grouped into a category sometimes called "dunnage", this is the material placed inside the container to cushion sensitive components from impact damage, and to prevent parts from rubbing or vibrating during transit.
Cushioning can also be used for placement and presentation, and to insure that all parts of a kit are present and accounted for.
